Cannaregio quick guide
Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six sestieri (districts) of Venice. This area is much quieter than the tourist areas of San Marco and Rialto yet full of life in a calmer way.
Cannaregio is the home of the Venetian Ghetto that began in 1516 when Jews were restricted to living within an area that was enclosed by guarded gates and no one was allowed to leave from sunset to dawn. Restrictions on daily Jewish life continued for more than 270 years, until Napoleon conquered the Venetian Republic in 1797. He removed the gates and gave all residents the freedom to live where they chose.
The Strada Nuova was built in the 19th century through Cannaregio, from close to the station almost to the Rialto Bridge, this area of Cannaregio is a busy tourist area, but in general the rest of Cannaregio is residential and peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops, and small cafés.
